Although his given name was Pi, he is best known by his style name Cheng-ming. His other style name was Cheng-chung and his sobriquet was Heng-shan chü-shih. Wen Cheng-ming is considered one of the most influential painters of the Wu school, which developed in Soochow duing the Ming dynasty. When he was fifty-four years old, he was sent to the capital to serve as a member of the Hanlin Academy. There he participated in the compilation of the Veritable Records of Wu-tsung. Later, he became bored with life in the capital and returned to his home where he devoted himself to artistic endeavors. Not much care was taken in the execution of this painting, which was painted as a gift for a friend. The brushwork, however, is very fine. The inscription contains a personal note which reads as follows: “In the past, you gave me a beautiful gift, and I still have not repaid you.
